![]() Not even 30 seconds into the second quarter, the Utes defense trotted onto the field as Tavion Thomas had just punched in his second rushing touchdown of the day to give Utah a 14-7 advantage. When you score 73 points, there are a lot of great plays to choose from, but Utah's top play of the day came on the defensive side of the ball. ![]() Junior Tafuna had the play of the day for Utah.Reid does a great job reading quarterbacks' eyes and should secure one, if not multiple, interceptions on the season. Karene Reid made his presence felt in coverage where he generated two pass deflections, one of which was nearly an interception. It also looked like he felt more comfortable after having the first game under his belt going into Utah's matchup with the Thunderbirds. It's easy to see why Barton was such a high recruit when you see his combination of speed and strength. ![]() Lander Barton also had a fantastic Rice Eccles debut with his first sack as a Ute and was constantly disrupting the Thunderbird's offense. Diabate read the field much better in his second game. Then after a pass interference gave the Thunderbird a first down, he blasted the Thunderbirds ball carriers with a thunderous hit that stopped all the backs momentum. On the game's first defensive play, he met the pulling center in the hole, stood him up, and helped bring down the running back. Diabate had to leave the game in the second quarter, but before that was flying all over the field. Fortunately for Utah against Southern Utah, all three were outstanding. Between his big game and Brant's last week, the best tight end duo in the west resides in Salt Lake.Ģ7 Missed tackles was the biggest number Utah was trying to rectify from the Florida game, and a lot of those missed tackles were by Lander Barton, Mohamoud Diabate, and Karene Reid. Dalton's huge frame also means when he's covered, he's still open since he can win any 50/50 ball. He excels at generating yards after the catch and displays excellent body control breaking out of tackles. Speaking of athleticism, Dalton got airborne as he huddled a would-be tackler and kept running for a big gain. The 6'4 tight end also has elite athleticism allowing him to get open down the field and create significant gains for Utah's offense. Dalton does a great job on stop routes of turning back to the ball coming out of his breaks, making it difficult for defensive backs to stay with him. Cam's first pass of the day went to Dalton setting the stage for what was to come. Even more impressive is that he did all this in a single half. Dalton hauled in seven catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns, with each of those marks either the most he's ever had in a game with Utah or tying his most. the Florida Gators in the season opener, but as he did in the 2021 home opener, he went off in Rice Eccles on Saturday.
